Use Adblock or Adblock Plus (freeware). I don't think they are available on Internet Explorer but if not then download Mozilla Firefox - much nicer than crusty old IE anyway.

when you install it, sign up to one of the lists - it will then automatically block most annoying ads automatically.

You can also right-click on advertisements you want to block and add them to the "filters" menu.

Be aware though that it sometimes needs to be switched off to allow sites to show all the content - it's a small price to pay for having an ad-free internet :-)
